Construction Law

A stronger foundation.
A clearer path forward.

Contracts, payment and construction disputes. Apricity Law advises property owners, developers, general contractors and subcontractors in Truckee, Lake Tahoe and throughout California.

Discuss your construction matter From the first agreement to the final resolution

Built on details.
Backed by clear counsel.

A construction project brings together property, people, money and a long chain of promises. When the documents leave questions open—or the work moves away from the plan—small disagreements can become expensive distractions.

We help you understand the agreement, preserve your position and decide what comes next. Our construction practice connects transactional advice with dispute resolution, so the legal strategy reflects both the project and the problem.

Owners & developers

Set expectations before work begins. Address payment requests, incomplete or defective work, project changes and claims affecting your property.

General contractors

Align prime contracts and subcontracts, document changes, manage payment issues and respond when a project relationship breaks down.

Subcontractors

Understand the scope you are taking on, document extra work and evaluate payment remedies when the money does not follow the work.

From groundwork to resolutionThe complete perspective

01 / Lay the groundwork

Start with a
stronger agreement.

Construction contracts

We draft, review and negotiate owner-contractor agreements, subcontracts and related project documents. The focus is practical: scope, exclusions, pricing, progress payments, schedule, change procedures, insurance, indemnity, termination and dispute resolution.

For California residential work, we evaluate applicable home improvement contract requirements rather than treating a generic form as a finished agreement.

02 / Keep the structure sound

When the plan changes,
protect the project.

Change orders & extra work

A revised scope should not leave the price or responsibility unresolved. We help document requested changes, evaluate authorization and notice requirements, and address disputed extras, allowances and backcharges.

Delays & disruption

Missed milestones, sequencing problems and interrupted access can affect everyone on site. We assess the contract, schedule and project records to evaluate responsibility, extensions, delay claims and a workable path toward completion or an orderly exit.

03 / Protect what you have built

The work has value.
Protect your position.

Payment disputes & mechanics’ liens

We advise on unpaid progress and final payments, disputed invoices, retention, lien waivers and releases. For contractors and subcontractors, we evaluate available collection and lien remedies. For owners, we assess lien claims, payment documentation and options for addressing claims against the property.

California notice, recording and enforcement requirements can be time-sensitive. A preliminary notice is different from a recorded lien. Bring notices and payment records to counsel promptly; the applicable deadlines depend on the facts.

04 / Resolve the unfinished business

A clear strategy.
A considered resolution.

Construction defects

Water intrusion, defective installation, incomplete work and departures from plans can raise overlapping contract, workmanship and responsibility questions. We evaluate the agreements, project history and available expert evidence, and address applicable notice and pre-litigation procedures before selecting a course of action.

Construction litigation & dispute resolution

When discussion is not enough, we represent clients in construction disputes through negotiation, mediation, arbitration or litigation, as appropriate. We connect the legal merits with the cost of the dispute, the project’s condition and your commercial goals.

A little more clarity

Construction law.
Your questions.

Who does Apricity Law represent in construction matters?

We advise California property owners, developers, general contractors and subcontractors. Representation is subject to a conflict check and an agreed scope; we do not represent opposing interests in the same dispute.

Do you handle projects in Truckee and Lake Tahoe?

Yes. Our California construction practice serves Truckee, the California side of Lake Tahoe and clients throughout California. Let us know the project’s location and the parties involved when you contact us.

When should I have a construction contract reviewed?

Before signing, starting work or agreeing to a significant change. Early review helps clarify scope, payment, responsibility and the process for addressing problems. If work is already underway, we can review the existing documents and the issue you are facing.

Can you help if I have not been paid—or a lien has been recorded?

Yes. We evaluate the payment history, agreements, notices and available remedies. Lien rights and defenses depend on California’s requirements and the project facts. Send any notice or recorded lien promptly so counsel can assess the deadlines that may apply.

Does every construction defect dispute go straight to court?

No. The contract and applicable California law may require notice, an opportunity to inspect or repair, mediation or other steps first. We assess which procedures apply and whether negotiation, arbitration or litigation fits the matter.

How are construction matters billed?

The scope and fees depend on the work requested and the dispute’s complexity. We discuss those terms before an engagement begins. Contacting the firm does not itself create an attorney-client relationship.
